Psychic First Aid

Emergencies that require first aid can happen when we are working energetically, just as they can happen in any moment in life.  The difference is in how we treat psychic or energetic emergencies.

A physical emergency usually occurs with some shock or trauma to the person's system.  While we can experience shock or trauma psychically, we usually get ourselves into distress more through an overextension of our own energies than through some outside agency having an effect upon us.  In either case, just as with physical first aid the need is to return normal functioning to the body as soon as possible, with psychic or energetic first aid the need is to return normal energy levels and functioning to the body as soon as possible.

Just as with physical emergencies, much can be done within the first few moments to lessen the distress and possible negative consequences for the person affected.  It is important to be aware of the methods of both physical and psychic first aid, both for ourselves and for any one we may encounter.                            Many blessings, Catherine Wilkins

DR ABC

is the memory key for physical first aid.  By remembering this you can remember what to do in an emergency situation.

D is for Danger

Check that there is no danger to yourself or others, including the person needing help.  If you can, move them away from the danger without putting yourself at risk.
E.g. moving them away from a fire.
Call emergency services (check the local number).

R is for Response

Talk to the person.  If they can answer sensibly they're conscious.  If conscious reassure them.  If unconscious carefully roll the patient onto their side, (this is called the recovery position) ensuring that you support the patient’s neck.

A is for Airway

Tilt their head back (if they aren't injured) and open their mouth.  Check there's nothing in the airway (use your fingers).  Removing anything solid, let liquids drain out to the side.

B is for Breathing

'Look, listen and feel.’

Look for the chest moving
Listen for breath sounds
Feel for the rise and fall of the chest

If they're breathing leave them on their side
(recovery position). Keep an eye on them until help arrives.

If they're not breathing, turn them onto their back, open airway by tilting patient’s head back and after lifting their chin, start breathing for them (2 breaths).

Recheck breathing, if the patient is still not breathing check for a pulse

C is for Circulation

Find the pulse next to their Adam’s Apple.  If there's a pulse but no breath keep breathing for them.  Make sure you get chest movement.

If there is no pulse commence CPR (Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation) immediately.

Put the heel of your hand on their breast bone and squeeze the chest to 1/3 of its depth.  Five pumps then two breaths.
If pulse returns but the person has no breathing continue rescue breathing until Ambulance arrives.  If no pulse then continue CPR until help arrives.

Manifestation of Psychic Distress

We recognise a physical emergency because the person loses their normal responsiveness and their body has shut down.  This is similar to a psychic or energetic emergency.  The primary thing we will notice is that the person has lost their normal energetic responsiveness and level of energies.  We have all had moments like that.  Some of these are simply moments when we have been confronted by an incompletion and the loss of energy is simply due to that incompletion.  By a simple acknowledgement, then, we can retrieve our normal energies.  Psychic emergency or distress is different.  In this case the psychic emergency is sufficiently severe to effect the physical, most commonly the nervous system.

One of the most common causes of psychic distress is a person extending themselves way beyond what their physical body is capable of doing.  I have experienced this at times when I have had a client whose situation has required a more intense use of my energy than I have been used to up until that point.  It is for many of us the same as running a marathon before we are ready for it.  The end result is one of exhaustion.  But instead of the exhaustion being felt in our muscles we feel it in our nervous system instead.  We drain our nervous system of the biochemical elements that make it able to function, especially those elements that are used in energetic or psychic functioning of the nervous system.

These biochemical elements are glycogen and noradrenalin.  Glycogen is the fuel of the brain and spinal cord, or central nervous system.  It is a form of sugar which the nerves use when they are performing their work.  When performing energetic or psychic work there is intense activity in the brain and some areas of the spinal cord.  This intense activity uses up a great deal of the glycogen available.  If the effort is sustained or more intense than the person's system can handle the reserves of glycogen can be drained, threatening a nutritional collapse for the nervous system.

Noradrenalin is related to adrenalin chemically.  It is one of the neuro-transmitters; that is, it is one of the chemicals that nerve endings send from one to another across the nerve synapse or junction to tell the next nerve to fire or not to fire.  Noradrenalin tells the nerve to fire.  It is the neurotransmitter most used during the intense activity of psychic or energetic work.  For this reason its reserves can be drained by a too-long sustained or more intense psychic activity.  This can threaten an energetic collapse similar, though more intense, than the energetic collapse experienced with adrenal exhaustion (such as when we have been putting in a sustained effort for some intense reason and then we no longer need to - it is then we truly feel how exhausted we have become).

Apart from psychic exhaustion psychic or energetic first aid may be needed at times of energetic or psychic trauma.  When this occurs proper functioning becomes disrupted due to trauma to the energetic or subtle structures of the body.

Treatment of Psychic Distress

Just as with physical distress there is a 'window of opportunity'.  Physically, this window is determined by the circulatory needs of the brain.  A person's brain can sustain a lack of oxygen for approximately as little as four minute's before permanent damage occurs.  Therefore a great deal of difference can be made to a person's future path if they receive proper physical first aid care (please see DR ABC in column at left) as soon as possible.  With psychic first aid the window seems to be about twenty minutes.

This is because in metaphysical first aid the circulation to the brain is not the determining factor, but rather the nutritional supply to the brain seems to be the determining factor. If proper nutrition can be restored within twenty minutes very little after-effects are experienced.  If there is a greater lapse of time than this then the person can experience long term effects.  These can range from a severe loss of energy for anything up to six weeks, to a permanent loss in psychic or energetic ability.

The first consideration is to restore the psychic or energetic structure if that has been harmed in any way (see below).  Most often, fortunately, simply restoring the person's glycogen and noradrenalin levels, especially if it is done within the twenty minute window, is sufficient for most energetic or psychic first aid.

Please note: what we are saying here is for EMERGENCY ONLY.  What works well in such a situation is not recommended as part of a person's normal diet.

In order to restore the glycogen levels it is necessary for the person to have some sugar, the more easily absorbed the better.  Chocolate is effective for this, although glucose will work as well.

Noradrenalin, as we mentioned, is similar to adrenalin.  This is one of the situations in which caffeine is actually of benefit.  Caffeine blocks the breakdown of adrenalin - and noradrenalin - in the body.  This effectively increases the levels of adrenalin and noradrenalin in the body, creating the effects that caffeine has.

Effectively, a good cup of coffee and a piece of cake is a powerful restorative if TAKEN WITHIN TWENTY MINUTES  of the point of psychic exhaustion having been experienced.

**Please note: caffeine is a dangerous substance for many people with natural psychic abilities.  It is a powerful neural stimulant and therefore psychic stimulant.  Energy workers are often more intensely affected by it than others, which can be of benefit when psychic first aid is necessary but otherwise it can be unbalancing to their system.

Bolstering the Energy of Another - ACE

It is possible that psychic or energetic trauma can severely distort or even break the energetic or subtle structures of the body.  My most intense experience with this was, naturally, when I was first beginning.  I had been doing some planetary healing work around a highly charged area and there was a backlash (these days I know how to work so there isn't a backlash but my awareness still needed some growing at that point).  The backlash dislocated most of the chakras from my body.  I wasn't sure what had happened only that my energy was shattered, I could hardly move my body and I knew that if I went to sleep in that state I most likely would not wake up.  Fortunately I knew someone who, when I turned up on his doorstep unable to speak and hardly able to move, knew what to do.  He put my chakras back where they belong.  Hopefully you won't run into a similar situation but if you do here are some simple guidelines that may help.

A is for Appropriate

It is important to remember that there is a different intention with physical first aid than there is with metaphysical first aid.  With physical first aid we are focused on keeping the person alive; with metaphysical first aid our focus is more appropriately on what will serve them in their spiritual journey.  Sometimes people create situations for themselves to learn.  If we assist them too much, therefore, they may be denied the lessons they were seeking to gain.  Even with an apparent emergency it is important to check in first with the person, or their higher self, as to what is appropriate at such a time.  To restore their energy completely?  Or bolster their energy a little and assist them to restore it themselves?

C is for Consequences

If it is appropriate for you to restore their energy you may still wish to consider the consequences of doing so, for yourself and for them.  The psychic trauma would have occurred as a consequence of something they did or failed to do.  Make a note, if it is not appropriate to discuss it with them at this time, to discuss it with them later.  Experience by itself does not teach us anything - it is awareness of the significance of the experience, how the experience was the consequence of some of our own actions or energies, that teaches us.  By learning from the experience the memory of it will become a positive one rather than a memory of trauma.

E is for Energetic repair

The main structures to consider are the kundalini channel and the chakras.  Even if you do not know how to repair them, remember that FOCUS and INTENTION are what is required to work with energy.  If your perception is not yet at the point where you are able to perceive where their energetic structure has become disrupted, simply holding a powerful and intense intention that they will be as they were meant to be will have a powerful and beneficial effect.  At the least, it will correct enough of the distortion to give the person time to find an energetic healer than can correct the rest of the disruption.
