Nutrition for Energy

Nurturing ourselves for our health and continued evolution is one of the most important lessons.  Growth through nurturing is not only the most effective way, it is an essential way.  It is impossible to beat ourselves into a state of enlightenment, though many of us try to do just that.   Through nurturing ourselves we not only assist ourselves with our development, but also ensure we are working with energy, for ourselves and our clients, in a way that serves.  This is, if you like, part of occupational health and safety (OHS) for the metaphysical.  OHS is a factor in every endeavour, and energy work is no different.  There are many things we can do to assist ourselves, and especially our bodies, to deal with the stresses and strains of pouring increasing amounts of energy through our system.  Nutrition is one of the first considerations for our bodies.  By observing some of the simple guidelines outlined below you can assist your journey with energy to be more graceful and easy. As always, please email me if you have any questions.                       Many blessings, Catherine Wilkins

General Dietary Guidelines

  1. Eat whole, natural foods.  This is important for enzymes as well as nutrients.
  2. Eat only foods that will spoil (unprocessed), but eat them before they do. This helps to decrease toxins.
  3. Eat naturally-raised (organic) meats to further decrease toxins.
  4. Eat whole, naturally-produced milk products, preferably organic, and preferably raw and/or fermented, such as whole yogurt, cultured butter, whole cheeses and fresh and sour cream.
  5. Use only traditional fats and oils including butter and other animal fats, extra virgin olive oil, expeller expressed sesame and flax oil.
  6. Eat fresh fruits and vegetables, preferably organic, in salads and soups, or lightly steamed.
  7. Use whole grains and nuts that have been prepared by soaking or sprouting.  This switches off the enzyme suppressants that have been stopping them from sprouting until now.
  8. Include enzyme-enhanced lacto-fermented vegetables, fruits, beverages and condiments in your diet on a regular basis.  Miso is a wonderful product as is especially beneficial for vegetarians.
  9. Use your own meat stocks -  from the boiled bones of chicken, beef, lamb or fish and use liberally in soups and sauces.
  10. Use herb teas and coffee substitutes in moderation.
  11. Use filtered water for cooking and drinking.
  12. Use unrefined Celtic sea-salt and a variety of herbs and spices for food interest and appetite stimulation.
  13. Make your own salad dressing using raw vinegar, extra virgin olive oil and expeller expressed flax oil. Mixing these two oils gives you a good balance of your essential fatty acids.  Adding a bit of lemon is good for the liver.
  14. Use natural sweeteners in moderation, such as raw honey, maple syrup, dehydrated cane sugar juice and stevia powder.  Avoid artificial anything - including sweeteners.
  15. Use only unpasteurized wine or beer in strict moderation with meals. Actually, a small amount of alcohol occasionally is considered beneficial for the gut flora.
  16. Cook only in stainless steel, cast iron, glass or good quality enamel.
  17. Do NOT use microwave ovens.  The harsh radiation that you absorb through food that has been treated in this manner is a very strong vibration, and makes it harder for your body to operate from the more refined vibrations we are working towards in energy work.
  18. Use only natural supplements.
  19. Get plenty of sleep, exercise, water and natural light. Listen to your body.  S/he will tell you what s/he needs and when.
  20. Think positive thoughts and minimize stress.
  21. Practice forgiveness.  Remember, forgiveness is not about making the other person right for what they did.  It is not even about the other person.  It is about you.  It is about you reaching a point in your growth where you can say "I can let this go now because I know I will never let this happen again.  It won't happen again so I can now put it behind me."  Forgiveness says you are now bigger than whatever it is you need to forgive and you choose to not have it affect your life from this point on.

Physical Effects of Increasing Energy

As we continue our energetic development, and become stronger and more powerful in our use of energies, we have an increasing strain put on our physical bodies to manage these energies.  It is important to be able to work with both our physical body, as well as our spiritual self, in working with energy.  If not, then our efforts to continue our metaphysical or energetic evolution, while remaining in the physical, will become hampered.

The negative effects of increasing energy, such as lack of grounding, light-headedness, ringing in the ears, dehydration, weight gain, dizziness and other symptoms, can be largely managed metaphysically.  That is, if we ensure we are working with energy in a way that is balanced (i.e. we are working with a balanced mix of spiritual or divine and physical or earth energies), with a strong and clear kundalini channel, and do regular energy maintenance, many of these problems do not appear.  It is usually more an effect of the imbalance of energies; this is what the body finds hardest to manage.  When imbalance occurs the body cannot keep the energy within its structural energy channels and excess energy appears in some places, causing dehydration and inflammation, and in other places a lack of energy appears, causing various levels of dysfunction and weakness.  The weight gain that can accompany long-term energy work is the body's attempt to insulate itself from excessive and poorly balanced energies.

The first step, therefore, in occupational health and safety for the metaphysical is to ensure that our energies are always in balance.  This is the metaphysical equivalent to having a good posture.  When our posture is good, our weight is balanced, minimising the strain on our muscles.  If our posture becomes poor various of our muscles have to strain to keep us upright - the stress on our bodies increases.  In just the same way keeping our energies balanced means our bodies can manage the energetic load with a minimal of stress.

However, when we keep our energies balanced and maintained there are still some physical effects that we have to consider.

Energetic Stress Effects

There are two main systems in our bodies which are affected by increasing levels of energy when this is healthy and in balance.  When it is out of balance all systems can be affected, but we have already talked about the need to keep our physical and divine energies balanced.  However, even when our bodies have balanced energy to work with stress can still develop if we are doing a considerable amount of this work, as often happens when we are working from a clear space with health-giving energies.  Our practices become busy, we have a large number of clients to look after and if we are not careful to look after ourselves then our own bodies can suffer as a consequence.

The two systems which do the most work, and so experience the most stress, with an evolved level of increasing energies are the nervous system and the kidneys.

The nervous system is the system that transmits energy in a physical form.  Our nerves work through bioelectrical energy.  Each nerve synapse or junction, where a signal is passed from one nerve to the next, has a small, but measurable, bioelectrical charge.  And, as around every electrical current, there is a biomagnetic field around each and every nerve.  It is this biomagnetic phenomena which is often referred to as the aura.

When we access increasing levels or higher frequencies of energy there are five main changes in the nervous system (listed in the order they most commonly appear):

  1. there is an increased voltage or intensity within the nervous system as more signals are transmitted

  2. there is an increased sensitivity to the signals being transmitted

  3. there is a change in the frequency of the signals being transmitted

  4. there is an increase activity is some areas of the nervous system, most notably around the hippocampal areas (between the pituitary and the pineal glands)

  5. there is a re-orientation or change of connections between the nerves, or new connections made.

All of these effects mean that the nervous system is having increasing demands placed upon it.  If the nervous system is not supported nutritionally to deal with this stress then signs of inflammation will appear.  As there is a direct correlation between the kundalini channel and the nervous system this can have very intense, and sometimes unpleasant, consequences.  Read below for ways to support your nervous system nutritionally.

The kidneys are the keepers of our physical energy.  It is our kidney energy which, in many ways, determines what is loosely termed our constitution.  In Chinese medicine, for example, they speak of our kidney energy as holding our pre-natal (meaning 'before birth') energy, i.e. we receive our kidney energy from our parents.  In a very real way the kidney energy is the centre of the cellular consciousness that our bodies hold.

Each and every time we do energy work we are drawing on our kidney energy.  The more aligned our bodies are with what we are doing metaphysically the less of a drain we will experience.  But no matter how aligned our intentions and our bodies become there will always be an effort experienced within our kidneys.  In order to be able to continue to do strong metaphysical work we have to consider our kidneys.

When our kidney energy is running low we will experience one or more of the following: feeling dehydrated no matter how much water we drink, feeling cold on the inside, even when it is warm on the outside (what I refer to as 'bone cold'), pain in the area of the kidneys (the lower back - but to the side of the spine) or a feeling of fatigue.  There is a relationship between kidney energy and sleep so that when we do not have enough sleep our kidney energy becomes depleted and then with depleted kidney energy we do not sleep as well (without kidney energy we tend to run off adrenal energy).

One of the difficulties with our kidney energy is that, just as we are born with however many kidney cells we will have throughout life (they do not replace themselves like other cells), it is not easy to replace this energy once it is lost.  The most important and usual way we have to replace our kidney energy is through getting plenty of sleep, particularly deep, theta level sleep.  If you ever wake up feeling bone tired, as if you have not had any sleep at all, it is for one of two reasons:

  1. you have not spent enough time in the deeper, theta levels for your body, and especially your kidney energy, to be able to regenerate

  2. you have spent more time than is advisable astral travelling.  Most of us, whether we are conscious of it or not, 'get out' of our bodies and wander around in the astral, experiencing things as a spirit rather than a body, when we sleep.  When we astral travel we are not getting complete rest and our bodies' kidney energy is not able to regenerate because we are using our kidney energy when we astral travel.  For this reason it is important to ensure that you get at least four hours of complete rest each night, that is, four hours in which you are not astral travelling.  (If this sounds like you, set your intention to 'stay home' for at least four hours each night when you go to sleep.)

The second most important way to replace our kidney energy is through drawing in more balanced energy into our kidneys.  This often takes a conscious effort, and so it is one of the things that should be part of our regular energy maintenance.  And of course the kidneys also benefit from being supported nutritionally.  The right nutrition can go a long way to assist the kidneys to deal with this stress.  Without this support signs of dehydration appear, and if this continues then weight gain can occur.  Read below for ways to support your kidney energy nutritionally.

Nutrition to Support the Nervous System

The nutrients that are most important to the support of the nervous system are:

  • essential fatty acids.  The brain is a very fatty organ.  It is because every nerve has around it a sheath.  This is the same as the insulating cable that the electrician places around every electrical wire.  It makes sure that the charge gets to where it's needed and stays out of areas where it is not wanted.  This nerve sheath is called a myelin sheath and it is built out of essential fatty acids.  Fat does not conduct electrical charge, so it makes a very good insulator.  As the intensity of the bioelectrical charge increases there is a greater demand placed on this biological insulator.  It needs replacing more often.  So our requirement for essential fatty acids increases the more energy work we do.

  • Vitamin B1 is the 'thinking vitamin'.  It is Vitamin B1 that the nerves need in order to function properly.  (Incidentally, this vitamin is stripped out of the body by alcohol.)  As with all Vitamin Bs it is important to take this vitamin with the whole vitamin B complex.

  • Magnesium and Zinc are two minerals which assist in the efficient functioning of the nervous system.  Other minerals are important, of course, but these two minerals appear to be the ones for which the demand increases most when the amount of energy work we do increases.

  • Carbohydrates, naturally we mean complex carbohydrates, are important for the brain.  Without carbohydrates the nervous system would not get the glycogen it needs.  This is the biochemical 'fuel' for the nervous system - and the nervous system needs a lot of it.

These are the main nutritional supports for the nervous system.  As you can see, primarily it is about having a good diet, but being aware of just a few specific supplements.  For general guidelines for a good diet please see General Dietary Guidelines in the column at left.

Nutrition to Support the Kidneys

The nutrients that are most important to the support of the nervous system are:

  • Vitamin C is the 'respiration vitamin'.  This is not just about the lungs, but about cellular respiration.  It is of huge assistance to the kidneys.  This vitamin is similar to Vitamin B in that it is a complex.  These days most of us are aware that Vitamin B is a complex because they stopped calling it niacin, thiamine, cyanocobalamin, etc. and started calling them B1, B2, B12, etc.  Natural Vitamin C is also a complex.  There have been reports of vitamin C (at large doses) having side effects, but this is when only ascorbic acid (which most of us call Vitamin C) is taken by itself.  The other parts of natural vitamin C have strange names like rutin, biotin, bioflavonoids and some others.  Make sure that you take either natural vitamin C (in parsley, broccoli, dark berries, rosehips, and many other fruits and vegetables - not oranges so much, though.  That is more of a marketing thing.) or a Vitamin C Complex.  Incidentally, Vitamin C is one of the most effective anti-inflammatories so it also helpful if your nervous system is stressed and inflamed.

  • A balanced mineral intake is essential for the kidneys to function well.  You have heard that you are mostly water?  Well, you are actually mostly seawater and this is still the best mineral supplement to take - a good, unbleached form of sea salt.

  • Plenty of water is necessary, of course.  Please make sure this is filtered and, if possible, energetically cleansed.

  • Ginger is very beneficial for the kidneys, especially if you are experiencing 'bone cold'.  Ginger is very helpful in restoring the yin:yang balance to the body.

  • Plenty of sleep We have already spoken of the importance of this.

  • Kidney cleanses are necessary because the kidney needs it regularly, not just now and then as part of a heroic cleanse.  Gentle and effective kidney cleanses are rosehip or raspberry leaf tea and watermelon.  Kidney cleanse programs are also available from any good health store.

These are the main nutritional supports for the kidney energy.  As with the nervous system, it is primarily about having a good diet with a few specific supplements.  For general guidelines for a good diet please see General Dietary Guidelines in the column at left.
